The Loom is located in one of London’s few remaining Victorian wool warehouses in Whitechapel. Whitechapel is a unique location, full of Georgian and Victorian terraces, industrial warehouses, new buildings, bars, coffee shops, boutiques and galleries – and is the perfect home for The Loom, which successfully fuses old traditions with modern additions to create 110,000 sq. ft of modern and unique creative space for entrepreneurs, innovators and creative minds to come together, be inspired and to achieve great things.

Careful decisions were considered and made on what elements to remove, what features to keep, and how to successfully incorporate new additions. The metal screen of the new entrance refers to an historic loom, connecting the new intervention with the original use of the building. The new mural in the entrance provides a playfully surreal take on the building’s history.

The reconfigured layout has a new entrance to the west on Gowers Walk, thereby making a connection with Goodman’s Fields. This connection includes the office reception and a new public café. The entrance enjoys a generous opening in the existing façade and is lit by an atrium space in the centre of the building; providing space and light to the circulation on the upper floors.

Appointed by Helical Plc, we were the Approved Inspectors providing building regulation compliance and guidance on the main scheme and later providing additional services through Helical Plc and Warnes Projects to a large number of fit-outs for individual tenants since the completion of the original scheme.

‘The Loom is housed in a listed building, and we provided building regulation guidance and support to ensure that the project achieved building regulation compliance from the design stage through to completion’.

Managing Director, Simon Polley

The Loom was winner of the Listed Building (Over £5m) award at the AJ Retrofit Awards 2018 and was winner of both the RIBA London Award 2017 and RIBA National Award 2017.
